1956 Topps #327 Bob Wiesler

About Bob Wiesler
Robert George Wiesler (August 13, 1930 - August 10, 2014) was a hard-throwing left-handed pitcher whose promise was undermined by chronic wildness. Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1949 out of Beaumont High School in his native St. Louis, he made his major-league debut on August 3, 1951, ten days before his 21st birthday, then lost the 1952 season to U.S. Army service during the Korean War era. He pitched for the Yankees in parts of three seasons (1951, 1954-1955) before being dealt to the Washington Senators prior to 1956 in a seven-player trade that also sent Lou Berberet, Whitey Herzog, Herb Plews and Dick Tettelbach to Washington for Bobby Kline and Mickey McDermott. Given a rotation spot in 1956, Wiesler's control betrayed him: he walked 112 batters in just 123 innings and finished 3-12 with a 6.44 ERA. Over six big-league seasons he compiled a 7-19 record with 113 strikeouts in 70 games, later working for the Anheuser-Busch brewery in St. Louis. This 1956 Topps high-number card (#327, Series 4) is his rookie card.
