About Ed Fitz Gerald

Ed Fitz Gerald was a right-handed backup catcher who attended Saint Mary's College of California and served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II before turning professional in 1946. He debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 19, 1948, and over a 12-season career (1948–1959) he played for the Pirates (1948–1953), the Washington franchise pictured on this card (1953–1959), and the Cleveland Indians (1959), appearing in 807 games. Behind the plate he handled Cliff Chambers' no-hitter on May 6, 1951, and as a hitter he authored one famous moment—on June 27, 1958, he broke up Billy Pierce's bid for a perfect game with a two-out double in the ninth inning. His finest season came in 1954 with Washington, when he set career highs in a 115-game campaign and batted .289 with 40 RBI. Never an All-Star, Fitz Gerald finished with a .260 average, 542 hits, 82 doubles, 19 home runs, and 217 RBI, then coached in the American League from 1960 to 1964. This card lists his club as the "Washington Nationals," the interchangeable name used for the franchise more commonly called the Senators in that era.
