About Granny Hamner
Granville Wilbur "Granny" Hamner was a shortstop and second baseman signed by the Philadelphia Phillies out of Richmond, Virginia, reaching the majors as a 17-year-old during World War II with his debut on September 14, 1944. He spent the bulk of his career with the Phillies (1944-1959) before brief stints with the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Athletics, retiring after 17 seasons with a .262 average, 1,529 hits, 104 home runs, and 708 RBI. A three-time consecutive All-Star (1952-1954), he started the 1952 game on his home field at Shibe Park and served as Phillies team captain. Hamner was a cornerstone of the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the National League pennant winners, and though the Yankees swept the World Series in four games, he batted .429 (6-for-14) with three extra-base hits. Late in his career he reinvented himself as a knuckleball pitcher, though with little success. He reportedly disliked "Granny" and preferred "Gran." Never elected to Cooperstown, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and honored on the Phillies Wall of Fame.
