1956 Topps #114 Jim Owens

About Jim Owens
A hard-throwing right-hander from Gifford, Pennsylvania, James Philip "Bear" Owens signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1951 straight out of Bradford Area High School and tore through the minors, going 22-7 with a 1.76 ERA and a league-record 302 strikeouts at Miami in 1952 before earning International League Rookie of the Year honors at Syracuse in 1954. He debuted for the Phillies on April 19, 1955, against Brooklyn and pitched in the majors from 1955 through 1967 for Philadelphia (1955-56, 1958-62), the Cincinnati Reds (1963), and the Houston Colt .45s/Astros (1964-67). His finest season came in 1959, when he went 12-12 with a 3.21 ERA and 11 complete games for a last-place club. Owens is remembered as much for the "Dalton Gang," the hard-living Phillies pitchers (with Turk Farrell, Jack Meyer, and Seth Morehead) whose off-field antics were exposed in a 1960 Sports Illustrated article. He finished 42-68 with a 4.31 ERA and 516 strikeouts, then served as the Astros' pitching coach beginning in 1967, mentoring Larry Dierker, Mike Cuellar, and Don Wilson. This card #114 exists with both the scarcer white and the common gray back stock. Owens died September 8, 2020, at age 86.

Variations & how to tell them apart
White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)
Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.
- White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
