About Phil Rizzuto
A Brooklyn-born, right-handed shortstop, Phil Rizzuto signed with the New York Yankees after early minor-league work and was named The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year in 1940 with the Kansas City Blues. He debuted in 1941 and played 13 seasons (1941-42, 1946-56), all with the Yankees, missing 1943-45 while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A slick fielder and expert bunter who led the American League in sacrifice hits from 1949 to 1952, Rizzuto was a five-time All-Star (1942, 1950-53). His finest year came in 1950, when he batted .324 with 200 hits and 125 runs to win the AL Most Valuable Player Award. He anchored the Yankee dynasty to seven World Series titles (1941, 1947, 1949-53) and retired with a .273 average, 1,588 hits, 38 home runs, and 563 RBI. Nicknamed "The Scooter" by minor-league teammate Billy Hitchcock for his darting style on the bases, Rizzuto later became a beloved Yankees broadcaster (1957-96), famous for his cry of "Holy cow!" He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1994. This card, from the set's second series, exists with both the scarcer white and more common gray back stock.

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only.
