1956 Topps #88 Johnny Kucks

About Johnny Kucks
John Charles Kucks Jr. (born July 27, 1932, in Hoboken, New Jersey; died 2013) was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the New York Yankees in January 1952 out of Jersey City, where he had starred at Dickinson High School, and honed his craft in the minors and during two years of military service before debuting with the Yankees on April 17, 1955. A sinkerballer, Kucks broke out in 1956 with an 18-9 record, 12 complete games, and three shutouts, earning selection to the American League All-Star team (though he did not appear in the game). That October he authored one of the great postseason performances: starting Game 7 of the 1956 World Series at Ebbets Field, he shut out the Brooklyn Dodgers on three hits, 9-0, retiring Jackie Robinson on strikes for the final out in what proved to be the last World Series game ever played in that ballpark. He won World Series titles with the Yankees in 1956 and 1958. Kucks pitched for the Yankees (1955-1959) and Kansas City Athletics (1959-1960), finishing 54-56 with a 4.10 ERA. This card (#88, a Kucks rookie) exists with both white and gray back stock, the gray being the scarcer variety in Series 1.

Variations & how to tell them apart
White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)
Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.
- White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
