About Gil McDougald
Gilbert James McDougald (1928-2010) was a versatile infielder who spent his entire 10-year major-league career (1951-1960) with the New York Yankees. Signed by New York's organization, the San Francisco native reached the majors in 1951 and immediately won American League Rookie of the Year, batting .306 while edging Minnie Minoso. That October he became the first rookie to hit a grand slam in a World Series, in Game 5 against the Giants. Known for an unorthodox open, waist-cocked batting stance that Casey Stengel defended, McDougald played second base, third base, and shortstop with equal skill, earning five All-Star selections at three positions. He was part of eight AL pennant winners and five World Series champions, finishing with a .276 average, 112 home runs, and 576 RBI. On May 7, 1957, his line drive struck Cleveland pitcher Herb Score in the eye, an incident that haunted him. Rather than be exposed in the 1961 expansion draft, he retired after 1960. This card appears in Series 3.
