About Bud Podbielan
Clarence Anthony "Bud" Podbielan, born March 6, 1924, in Curlew, Washington, was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949. After parts of four seasons in Brooklyn, he was traded to Cincinnati on June 15, 1952 (for Bud Byerly and cash) and spent most of his career with the Reds/Redlegs (1952–55, 1957), the club pictured on this 1956 Topps card. He later closed out his nine-year career with a single 1959 appearance for the Cleveland Indians. Podbielan finished 25–42 with a 4.49 ERA and 242 strikeouts over 172 games (76 starts, 20 complete games, 2 shutouts) and 641 innings. His most notorious outing came May 18, 1953, when he issued a franchise-record 13 walks in a 10-inning game against his former Dodgers. As a high-number card (#224), this issue exists only with white back stock, outside the gray/white variation that affects #1–180. Podbielan died October 26, 1982, in Syracuse, New York.
