About Joe Nuxhall
Joe Nuxhall is baseball's youngest modern major leaguer: signed by his hometown Cincinnati Reds on February 18, 1944, at age 14, the Hamilton, Ohio, left-hander debuted that June 10 against the pennant-bound Cardinals at 15 years, 316 days — a record that still stands. Sent to the minors to develop, he returned to Cincinnati in 1952 and pitched 16 major-league seasons in all (1944, 1952-1966), the bulk with the Reds/Redlegs plus stops with the Kansas City Athletics (1961) and Los Angeles Angels (1962). A two-time NL All-Star (1955 and 1956), he won a career-high 17 games with five shutouts in 1955 and finished 135-117 with a 3.90 ERA and 1,372 strikeouts, and remained a capable hitter with 15 home runs. After retiring he became a beloved Reds radio broadcaster for four decades, earning the nickname "The Ol' Left-hander" and the signature sign-off "This is the old left-hander, rounding third and heading for home." He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1968. Fittingly for a folk hero, this 1956 Topps card carries a famous printing error: his surname is misspelled "Nuxall."
