About Lew Burdette
Selva Lewis "Lew" Burdette Jr., a right-handed pitcher from Nitro, West Virginia, was signed by the New York Yankees in 1947 but pitched only twice for them before being dealt to the Boston Braves in August 1951 in the trade that sent Johnny Sain to New York. Moving with the franchise to Milwaukee, Burdette became one of the National League's workhorses, teaming with Warren Spahn and Bob Buhl to give the Braves one of the era's best rotations. In 1956 — the season of this card — he led the NL with a 2.70 ERA. His signature performance came in the 1957 World Series against the Yankees, when he won three complete games, including shutouts in Games 5 and 7, to bring Milwaukee its only title and earn Series MVP honors. He won 20 games in 1958 and 21 in 1959, and on August 18, 1960, he no-hit the Phillies 1-0, retiring all but one batter. Long dogged by (denied) spitball rumors, Burdette quipped his best pitch was "one I do not throw." Over 18 seasons he went 203-144 with a 3.66 ERA and 1,074 strikeouts. He died in 2007.
