About Chuck Tanner
Charles William Tanner Jr. was born on the Fourth of July, 1928, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and signed with the Boston Braves in June 1946 as a left-handed-hitting outfielder. He spent a decade in the minors, batting over .300 nearly every year and hitting .323 for Atlanta in 1954, before reaching the majors in dramatic fashion: on Opening Day, April 12, 1955, he pinch-hit for Warren Spahn and homered off Gerry Staley on the first big-league pitch he ever saw, becoming just the seventh player to do so. Over eight seasons (1955-1962) with the Milwaukee Braves, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, and Los Angeles Angels, the left fielder batted .261 with 21 home runs and 105 RBI in 396 games. Tanner is far better remembered as a manager, guiding the Chicago White Sox, Oakland A's, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Atlanta Braves from 1970 to 1988 and leading the 1979 "We Are Family" Pirates to a World Series title, finishing 1,352-1,381. Relentlessly upbeat, he was nicknamed baseball's "Mr. Sunshine" for his optimism. He died in New Castle in 2011. His first-series 1956 Topps card exists with both the common white and scarcer gray back stock.

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
