About Milwaukee Braves Team

Card #95 is the Milwaukee Braves team card, picturing the franchise that had shaken up baseball in March 1953 when owner Lou Perini moved the club from Boston to Milwaukee, making the Braves the first major-league team to relocate in roughly half a century. Playing at new County Stadium, the club drew huge crowds, leading the majors in attendance with 2,005,836 fans in 1955. On the field the 1955 Braves went 85-69 under manager Charlie Grimm, finishing second in the National League, 13½ games behind the pennant-winning Brooklyn Dodgers. The roster was loaded with young stars: 21-year-old right fielder Hank Aaron hit .314 with 27 home runs and 106 RBI, third baseman Eddie Mathews slugged 41 homers with 101 RBI, and ace lefty Warren Spahn went 17-14 with a 3.26 ERA, backed by shortstop Johnny Logan, catcher Del Crandall, first baseman Joe Adcock, and pitcher Lew Burdette. This core would soon deliver Wisconsin's only World Series title, beating the Yankees in 1957 with Burdette winning three complete games. As a first-series card, #95 exists with both white and gray back stock (gray scarcer) and shows minor team-photo front variations.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

  • White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
