About Bob Buhl
Robert Ray "Bob" Buhl was a right-handed pitcher who first signed with the White Sox in 1946, was declared a free agent by Commissioner Happy Chandler in 1948, and then joined the Boston Braves organization. He reached the majors in 1953 and pitched 15 seasons for the Milwaukee Braves (1953-62), Chicago Cubs (1962-66), and Philadelphia Phillies (1966-67). With the Braves he formed the "Big Three" rotation alongside Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette, winning 18 games in both 1956 (18-8) and 1957, when his 18-7 mark led the National League in winning percentage (.720) and helped Milwaukee capture the pennant and its 1957 World Series title, followed by another pennant in 1958. Named an NL All-Star in 1960, Buhl finished 166-132 with a 3.55 ERA and 1,268 strikeouts. Famously inept at the plate, he went 0-for-70 in 1962. He died February 16, 2001, two days before Eddie Mathews.
