About Sherm Lollar
John Sherman "Sherm" Lollar Jr. (1924-1977) was a right-handed catcher regarded as one of the American League's finest defensive backstops of the 1950s. He signed out of the minors and reached the majors in 1946 with Cleveland, then passed through the Yankees (winning a 1947 World Series ring, with a single and RBI double in Game 3) and the St. Louis Browns before landing with the Chicago White Sox in 1952, where he anchored the pitching staff for a dozen seasons. A seven-time All-Star (1950, 1954-56, 1958-60), Lollar won the first three Rawlings Gold Gloves ever awarded to a catcher, in 1957, 1958, and 1959. On April 23, 1955, he became the first player to collect two hits in one inning twice in the same game. His finest year came in 1959, batting .265 with 22 homers and 84 RBI to lead the "Go-Go" White Sox to the pennant, where he homered off Roger Craig in the Series. He retired with 155 home runs and 808 RBI over 18 seasons.
