About Ron Jackson
Ronald Harris Jackson (born October 22, 1933, in Kalamazoo, Michigan) was a right-handed-hitting first baseman who stood a towering 6-foot-7. After attending Western Michigan University, he was scouted at Comiskey Park and signed as a "bonus baby" with the Chicago White Sox in June 1954, a contract that under the era's bonus rule required him to stay on the major-league roster. He debuted that same year and homered in just his third big-league game, a moment he later called his greatest thrill in sports. Jackson appeared in 196 games over seven seasons (1954-1960), all with the White Sox except a final stint with the Boston Red Sox in 1960, batting .245 with 116 hits, 17 home runs, and 52 RBI. Blocked in Chicago and never a full-time regular, he still flashed power in the minors, leading the American Association with 30 home runs and 99 RBI in 1959. After baseball he ran an insurance agency in his native Kalamazoo, where he died in 2008.
