Card #188 is the Chicago White Sox team card, capturing a franchise on the rise in the mid-1950s. In 1955, the season this 1956 Topps issue reflects, the White Sox went 91-63 under manager Marty Marion, finishing third in the American League, five games behind the pennant-winning New York Yankees. The club was built around speed, defense, and pitching rather than power, and would soon be celebrated as the "Go-Go Sox," a nickname born from fans shouting "Go!" as Cuban outfielder Minnie Minoso tore around the bases, an approach later formalized by a 1959 team song. That mid-decade roster was loaded: second baseman Nellie Fox hit .311 with 100 runs scored, third baseman George Kell batted .312, and Minoso supplied speed and on-base skill, while left-hander Billy Pierce anchored the staff as its ace, going 15-10 with a sparkling 1.97 ERA. Catcher Sherm Lollar, shortstop Chico Carrasquel, and pitcher Dick Donovan (also 15 wins) rounded out an All-Star-caliber core. This foundation carried the White Sox to their first American League pennant in forty years in 1959, when they reached the World Series before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers; the franchise would not win it all again until 2005.
