About Early Wynn

Signed by the Washington Senators for $100 a month at age 17, right-handed pitcher Early Wynn debuted in 1939 and spent 23 major-league seasons with Washington (1939, 1941-1948), the Cleveland Indians (1949-1957, 1963) and the Chicago White Sox (1958-1962). A workhorse who won 20 games five times (1951, 1952, 1954, 1956, 1959), he finished 300-244 with a 3.54 ERA, 2,334 strikeouts, 290 complete games and 49 shutouts, joining the exclusive 300-win club with his final victory in 1963. He was named to nine All-Star teams and captured the 1959 Cy Young Award at age 39 while leading the White Sox to the pennant. Nicknamed "Gus," Wynn was feared for pitching inside, once quipping he would knock down his own grandmother if she dug in against him. He reached the World Series with Cleveland in 1954 and Chicago in 1959, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
