About Mike Garcia
Signed by Cleveland scout Willis Butler in 1942 after he was spotted pitching semipro ball in Tulare, California, right-hander Mike Garcia climbed through the minors (a 22-win season at Bakersfield in 1946, then Wilkes-Barre and Oklahoma City) around World War II service before reaching the majors in September 1948. He spent the bulk of his 14-year career with the Indians (1948-1959), later pitching for the White Sox (1960) and Senators (1961), and finished 142-97 with a 3.27 ERA and 1,117 strikeouts across 428 games. From 1949 to 1954 he was the fourth ace of Cleveland's fabled "Big Four" alongside Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and Early Wynn, twice leading the American League in ERA (2.36 as a rookie in 1949, 2.64 in 1954) and twice in shutouts, and earning All-Star selection three straight years (1952-1954). His finest season came in 1954, when he went 19-8 for the 111-win Indians, though the club was swept in the World Series by the New York Giants (Garcia took the loss in Game 3). A burly 6-foot-1 workhorse, he was nicknamed "The Big Bear" — by his own account, "maybe I walk a little like a bear" — and was also billed in the press as "Mexican Mike." The only member of the Big Four not enshrined in Cooperstown, Garcia was inducted into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame in 2007.
