About Chico Carrasquel
Alfonso "Chico" Carrasquel (1926-2005) was a slick-fielding shortstop from Caracas, Venezuela, who broke into the majors with the Chicago White Sox on April 18, 1950, stepping in for franchise fixture Luke Appling. As a rookie he hit .282 and ran off a 24-game hitting streak, quickly winning over Chicago fans with his range and grace. In 1951 he beat Phil Rizzuto in fan balloting to become the first Latin American-born player to start an All-Star Game, the first of his four All-Star selections (1951, 1953-1955). He led American League shortstops in fielding percentage three times. Traded to Cleveland after 1955, Carrasquel appears here on his first Topps card in an Indians uniform (1956-1958), later finishing with Kansas City and Baltimore in 1959. Over ten seasons he batted .258 with 55 home runs and 474 RBI. Revered as the "Father of Venezuelan shortstops," he paved the way for Aparicio, Concepcion, Guillen, and Vizquel.
