About Ray Narleski
Raymond Edmond Narleski was born in 1928 in Camden, New Jersey, the son of Bill Narleski, a utility infielder for the Boston Red Sox in 1929-1930. Cleveland scout Billy Whitman signed him out of high school, and after a converted-to-relief apprenticeship at Indianapolis he reached the Indians in 1954. A hard-throwing right-handed reliever with excellent control, Narleski anchored the bullpen of Cleveland's 111-win 1954 AL champions as a rookie, leading the club with 13 saves and a 2.22 ERA before the team was swept by the New York Giants in the World Series. He and left-hander Don Mossi formed one of the game's best relief tandems, nicknamed the "Gold Dust Twins." In 1955 Narleski went 9-1, led the AL with 19 (then-unofficial) saves, appeared in a league-high 60 games, and finished sixth in MVP voting. He was a two-time American League All-Star (1956 and 1958). Over six seasons with Cleveland (1954-1958) and Detroit (1959) he went 43-33 with a 3.60 ERA, 454 strikeouts, and 58 saves before back trouble ended his career.
