About Bob Lemon
Bob Lemon signed with the Cleveland Indians as a 17-year-old in 1938 and reached the majors as an infielder/outfielder, appearing briefly in 1941 and 1942 before World War II service. Encouraged by fellow servicemen who admired his arm, he converted to pitching after the war and became one of the American League's dominant right-handers. Over 15 seasons, all with Cleveland (1941-42, 1946-58), the sinkerball specialist went 207-128 with a 3.23 ERA and 1,277 strikeouts, won 20 games seven times, and earned seven straight All-Star selections (1948-1954). He threw a no-hitter against Detroit on June 30, 1948, then led Cleveland to the World Series title that fall, winning two games with a 1.65 ERA against the Boston Braves. Alongside Bob Feller, Early Wynn, and Mike Garcia, he anchored one of history's great rotations. An outstanding hitter for a pitcher, he clubbed 37 career home runs. He later managed the 1978 Yankees to a championship after taking over mid-season, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1976.
