About Tom Hurd
Thomas Carr "Whitey" Hurd Jr. was a right-handed relief pitcher whose brief major-league career belied a long journey through the minors. Born May 27, 1924, in Danville, Virginia, the 5-foot-9 Hurd served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was signed by the Chicago White Sox as a shortstop in 1946 before converting to the mound in 1948. He finally reached the majors with the Boston Red Sox on July 30, 1954, at age 30, and worked exclusively out of the bullpen across three seasons (1954-1956). His best year came in 1955, when his eight wins led all American League relief pitchers (he finished 8-6). Over 99 career games he went 13-10 with a 3.96 ERA, 11 saves, and 96 strikeouts in 186 1/3 innings, making his final big-league appearance on September 29, 1956 -- the very year this Topps card was issued. Hurd pitched on for several more seasons in the high minors, starring as the ace reliever (1.65 ERA) for the 1958 Junior World Series champion Minneapolis Millers. He died September 5, 1982, in Waterloo, Iowa.
