About Bobby Thomson
Robert Brown "Bobby" Thomson, born October 25, 1923, in Glasgow, Scotland, signed with the New York Giants out of Staten Island's Curtis High School in 1942 for a $100 bonus, then served as a U.S. Army Air Forces bombardier in World War II before debuting in the majors on September 9, 1946. A right-handed-hitting outfielder, he authored one of baseball's most famous moments: on October 3, 1951, his walk-off three-run home run off Brooklyn's Ralph Branca capped a 5-4 win in the decisive NL pennant playoff, the blast immortalized as the "Shot Heard 'Round the World." A three-time All-Star (1948, 1949, 1952), Thomson led the National League in triples in 1952 and posted eight 20-homer seasons. Nicknamed "the Staten Island Scot" for his Scottish birth and Staten Island upbringing, he was traded to the Milwaukee Braves after 1953 -- the club shown on this 1956 card -- where a 1954 spring-training broken ankle famously opened an everyday spot for rookie Hank Aaron. Over 15 seasons with the Giants, Braves, Cubs, Red Sox, and Orioles he batted .270 with 264 home runs and 1,026 RBI in 1,779 games. He died August 16, 2010, and was never elected to the Hall of Fame.
