About Bill Bruton

Born November 9, 1925, in Panola, Alabama, Bill Bruton owed his start in pro ball to Negro Leagues Hall of Famer Judy Johnson, who spotted him playing in Wilmington, Delaware, mentored him, and later became his father-in-law when Bruton married Johnson's daughter. After a brief tryout with the Philadelphia Stars, Bruton signed with the Boston Braves organization in 1950 and tore through the minors before reaching the majors in 1953. A fleet center fielder, he spent eight seasons with the Milwaukee Braves (1953-1960) and four with the Detroit Tigers (1961-1964). Regarded as one of the fastest men in the game, Bruton led the National League in stolen bases in three straight seasons (1953-1955), in triples in 1956 and 1960, and in runs scored in 1960. His finest stage came in the 1958 World Series against the Yankees, where he drove in the winning run with a tenth-inning single in Game One, homered to lead off Game Two, and batted .412. Over 12 seasons he hit .273 with 94 home runs, 545 RBI, and 207 stolen bases. After baseball he spent more than two decades as a Chrysler executive, eventually a special assistant to Lee Iacocca. Bruton died December 5, 1995.
