About George Crowe

A powerful left-handed-hitting first baseman, George Daniel Crowe (born March 22, 1921, in Whiteland, Indiana; died 2011) took an unusual road to the majors. In 1939 he became the very first recipient of Indiana's "Mr. Basketball" award, and he later played professional basketball for the barnstorming New York Rens before breaking into pro baseball with the Negro National League's New York Black Yankees in 1947. He reached the big leagues with the Boston Braves in 1952 at age 31 and spent nine MLB seasons (1952-1961) with the Braves (Boston, then Milwaukee), the Cincinnati Redlegs, and the St. Louis Cardinals. His best year came in 1957, when, filling in for the injured Ted Kluszewski at Cincinnati, he belted a career-high 31 home runs; he was named to his lone All-Star team as a reserve in 1958. Over 702 games Crowe batted .270 with 467 hits, 81 home runs and 299 RBI, and he set a then-major-league record for career pinch-hit home runs. A respected veteran and mentor to younger Black players, he was known as "Big Daddy." His card sits in the third series of the 1956 Topps set with no printed error or variation.
