About Sammy White
Sammy Charles White (1927-1991) was a right-handed catcher and an All-American basketball player at the University of Washington who signed his first pro baseball contract with the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League in 1949 before the Boston Red Sox acquired his rights. He debuted in 1951 and served as Boston's number-one catcher from 1952 through 1959, later finishing with the Milwaukee Braves (1961) and Philadelphia Phillies (1962). Named an American League All-Star in 1953, White was prized more for his defense than his bat, hitting .262 with 66 home runs and 421 RBI over 1,043 games; his best year came in 1954 (.282, 14 HR, 75 RBI). On June 18, 1953, during Boston's 17-run inning against Detroit, he became the only 20th-century player to score three runs in a single frame. He also caught Mel Parnell's no-hitter on July 14, 1956, and once hit a walk-off grand slam off Satchel Paige in 1952. After baseball he ran Sammy White's Brighton Bowl near Fenway Park. As a Series 2 card, #168 exists with both the scarcer white and more common gray back-stock.

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only.
