About Bob Porterfield

Bob Porterfield (born August 10, 1923, in Newport, Virginia; died April 28, 1980) was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors with the New York Yankees on August 8, 1948. Over 12 seasons he pitched for the Yankees (1948-51), Washington Senators (1951-55), Boston Red Sox (1956-58), Pittsburgh Pirates (1958-59) and Chicago Cubs (1959), finishing 87-97 with a 3.79 ERA and 572 strikeouts. His career peaked in 1953 with Washington, when he led the American League with 22 wins, 24 complete games and nine shutouts while posting a 3.35 ERA, earning The Sporting News AL Pitcher of the Year honors and finishing seventh in MVP voting. He was an AL All-Star in 1954. After baseball he worked as a welder for Westinghouse and was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. This 1956 Topps card (#248, third series) shows him with the Red Sox.
