About Mickey Vernon

Born James Barton Vernon in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania in 1918, "Mickey" — a nickname given by an aunt that stuck for life — signed with the St. Louis Browns after a Villanova workout and reached the majors in 1939. The smooth left-handed first baseman spent most of his 20-season career (1939-1960) with the original Washington Senators, also playing for Cleveland, the Boston Red Sox (shown on this 1956 card), Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh. He won two American League batting titles, hitting a career-best .353 in 1946 (11 points ahead of Ted Williams) and .337 in 1953, when he edged Al Rosen on the season's final day. A seven-time All-Star, he retired with 2,495 hits, 172 home runs, 1,311 RBI, and a .286 average, and set MLB's career record for double plays by a first baseman. Widely called "the Gentleman First Baseman," Vernon was famously President Eisenhower's favorite player and later managed the expansion Senators (1961-1963). As a series-three high number, this card carries the scarcer gray-back stock. He died in 2008.
