About Billy Goodman
Billy Goodman (1926-1984) signed with the Atlanta Crackers in 1944 and, after Navy service in World War II, was purchased by the Boston Red Sox, debuting in 1947. A left-handed hitter of exceptional versatility, he played every position except catcher and pitcher, chiefly second base, third base, and first base. In 1950, despite missing a month with an ankle injury, Goodman won the American League batting title at .354 and finished runner-up to Phil Rizzuto for AL MVP. He earned All-Star selections in 1949 and 1953, when he started at second base. Over 16 seasons with the Red Sox, Orioles, White Sox, and Houston Colt .45s, he batted .300 with 1,691 hits, 19 home runs, and 591 RBI in 1,623 games, his .376 on-base percentage making him an ideal leadoff man. He reached the 1959 World Series with the pennant-winning "Go-Go" White Sox and was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2004.
