About George Susce
George Susce Jr., a right-handed pitcher from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1950 out of Schenley High School, choosing Boston over Cleveland in the belief it offered a faster path to the majors; his professional climb was interrupted by U.S. Army service (1952-1954), including a stint at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He reached the majors with the Red Sox in 1955 and pitched five big-league seasons (1955-1959) for Boston and, from 1958, the Detroit Tigers, finishing 22-17 with a 4.42 ERA and 177 strikeouts over 117 appearances. His rookie 1955 campaign was easily his best: 9-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 29 games (15 starts). That July he threw a one-hit shutout against the Kansas City Athletics, allowing only a first-inning single to Vic Power. The game carried a rare family footnote: his father, George C.M. Susce, the veteran catcher and coach nicknamed "Good Kid," was on the Athletics' staff and watched his son pitch a big-league game for the first time. Arm trouble after 1955 curtailed a promising career. Susce was not elected to the Hall of Fame. On the card, #93 exists with both the common white and scarcer gray back-stock of the 1956 Topps set's first series.
