About Tom Gorman

Thomas Aloysius Gorman, a right-handed pitcher born January 4, 1925, in New York City and raised in Valley Stream on Long Island, reached the majors with the New York Yankees, debuting July 16, 1952. Working mostly out of the bullpen, he appeared in 289 big-league games (only 33 as a starter) over eight seasons through 1959, compiling a 36-36 record, a 3.77 ERA, 321 strikeouts, and 42 saves across 689⅓ innings. Gorman's time in the Bronx yielded two World Series championships, in 1952 and 1953, as the Yankees rolled to consecutive titles. After the 1954 season he was sent to the Athletics, and in 1955 -- the franchise's first year in Kansas City -- he emerged as a reliable reliever, recording 18 saves to finish second in the American League. He remained with Kansas City through 1959. This card, #246 in the third series, appears with the set's characteristic white- or gray-stock back. Gorman died December 26, 1992.
