About Harry Simpson
Harry Leon "Suitcase" Simpson was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and first baseman who broke into pro ball with the Negro Leagues' Philadelphia Stars in 1946 before the Cleveland Indians signed him. He debuted in the majors in 1951 and, over eight seasons through 1959, played for Cleveland, the Kansas City Athletics, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming one of the American League's earliest Black players. The 1956 season pictured on this card was his finest: with Kansas City he batted .293 with 21 home runs, 105 RBI, and a league-leading 11 triples, earned his only All-Star selection, and finished 11th in AL MVP voting. His nickname honored comic-strip character "Suitcase" Simpson, coined by sportswriters after his size-13 feet — "as large as suitcases." Traded to the Yankees in 1957, he reached that year's World Series. Simpson retired with 752 hits, 73 homers, and 381 RBI, and died in 1979.
