About Whitey Ford
Edward Charles "Whitey" Ford (1928-2020) was a left-handed pitcher and the ace of the New York Yankees' dynasty. Signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1947, the Queens native debuted in 1950, then returned from military service in 1953 to spend his entire 16-season career (1950, 1953-1967) in pinstripes. He went 236-106 with a 2.75 ERA and 1,956 strikeouts, his .690 winning percentage among the best of the modern era. A 10-time All-Star, Ford won the 1961 Cy Young Award and World Series MVP, led the AL in wins three times (1955, 1961, 1963) and in ERA twice (1956, 1958). He was a six-time World Series champion and holds the record for 33 2/3 consecutive scoreless Series innings, breaking Babe Ruth's mark. Manager Casey Stengel dubbed him "Slick," but he is best remembered as "The Chairman of the Board" for his poise. Ford was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1974; the Yankees retired his No. 16. His card #240 falls in the white-back Series 3.
