About Don Mueller

Don Mueller (1927-2011) was a left-handed-hitting right fielder whose bat control made him one of the 1950s' toughest outs. Son of former Pirates outfielder Walter Mueller, he signed with the Giants organization at 17 and debuted August 2, 1948, spending most of his 12-year career with the New York Giants (1948-1957) before finishing with the Chicago White Sox (1958-1959). Sportswriters dubbed him "Mandrake the Magician," after Lee Falk's comic-strip conjurer, for his knack of stroking hits through holes in the infield. In the 1954 championship season he peaked, leading the National League with 212 hits, finishing runner-up to teammate Willie Mays in the batting race at .342, hitting for the cycle, and batting .389 as the Giants swept Cleveland in the World Series. A two-time All-Star (1954-1955), he rarely struck out. He retired with a .296 average, 1,292 hits, 65 home runs, and 520 RBI. This #241 card is noted for a back-stock printing error listing his height as "6 inch."
