About Gail Harris

Boyd Gail Harris Jr. (1931-2012), a left-handed-hitting first baseman from Abingdon, Virginia, signed with the New York Giants at age 18 in 1950 and spent five and a half seasons in their farm system before debuting in the majors on June 3, 1955. He played all or part of six MLB seasons, with the Giants (1955-1957) and Detroit Tigers (1958-1960), appearing in 437 games and batting .240 with 320 hits, 51 home runs, and 189 RBIs. Harris earned a footnote in franchise history on September 21, 1957, when he hit the last home run ever struck by a New York Giants player before the club moved to San Francisco, part of a four-hit, seven-RBI afternoon against Pittsburgh. Traded to Detroit in January 1958 (with Ozzie Virgil, for Jim Finigan and cash), he enjoyed his finest season that year, setting career highs with a .278 average, 20 home runs, and 82 RBIs in 134 games. This 1956 Topps card #91 is Harris's rookie card and, like other first-series cards, exists with both the common white back and the scarcer gray back-stock variation.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

  • White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
