About New York Giants Team
Card #226 pictures the New York Giants, one of baseball's oldest and most storied franchises before its 1958 move to San Francisco. As the New York Giants the club captured 17 National League pennants and five World Series titles (1905, 1921, 1922, 1933 and 1954). Their most recent crown came in 1954, when Leo Durocher's team stunned the Cleveland Indians—winners of an AL-record 111 games—with a four-game sweep. That Series produced Willie Mays' legendary over-the-shoulder "Catch" off Vic Wertz in Game 1 and Dusty Rhodes' clutch pinch hitting. Mays, the 1954 NL MVP (.345, 41 home runs), anchored a roster that also featured Monte Irvin and ace Johnny Antonelli. By the time this 1956 card appeared, the glory had faded: under new manager Bill Rigney the Giants slumped to 67–87 and sixth place, 26 games back, though Mays (.296, 36 HR) and Antonelli (20–13, 2.86 ERA) still shone. The franchise left New York after 1957.
