About Jim Hearn
A right-handed pitcher out of Georgia Tech, Jim Hearn (born 1921 in Atlanta) signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1942, then served three years in the military during World War II before reaching the majors to stay in 1947. Over 13 seasons (1947–1959) with the Cardinals, New York Giants, and Philadelphia Phillies, he went 109–89 with a 3.81 ERA, 669 strikeouts, 63 complete games, and 10 shutouts. Claimed off waivers by the Giants in July 1950, he caught fire under manager Leo Durocher and led the National League in earned run average that year at 2.49. Hearn was a mainstay of the 1951 "Miracle" Giants, winning 17 games as the club erased a 13½-game deficit to Brooklyn; he won Game 1 of the famous pennant playoff and then beat the Yankees 6–2 in his lone start, Game 3 of the 1951 World Series at the Polo Grounds. He earned his only All-Star selection in 1952 after another 14-win season, and remained with the pennant-winning Giants organization through the mid-1950s. This 1956 Topps card (#202) captures him near the end of his Giants tenure.
