About Bill Tuttle

Bill Tuttle was a right-handed center fielder who starred at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, hitting .338 there before Tigers scout George Moriarty signed him and he debuted for Detroit on September 10, 1952. He spent 11 major-league seasons (1952, 1954-1957 with the Tigers, 1958-1961 with the Kansas City Athletics, and 1961-1963 with the Minnesota Twins), finishing with a .259 average, 1,105 hits, 67 home runs, and 443 RBI over 1,270 games. Regarded as one of the American League's finest defensive outfielders, he led AL outfielders in putouts in 1955 and 1960 and in assists in 1959 and 1960; his best year was 1955, when he played all 154 games and scored 102 runs, and his lone .300 season came in 1959. Tragically, Tuttle was introduced to chewing tobacco by teammate Harvey Kuenn in 1955 and was diagnosed with oral cancer in 1993. After disfiguring surgeries he became a tireless volunteer for the National Spit Tobacco Education Program, touring clubhouses with Joe Garagiola to warn players of the dangers, before his death in 1998; Oral Health America later created the Bill Tuttle Award in his honor.
