About Babe Birrer
Werner Joseph "Babe" Birrer was a right-handed pitcher signed by the Detroit Tigers in 1947 out of Kensington High School in his native Buffalo, New York, launching a long professional career largely spent with the International League's Buffalo Bisons. He reached the majors on June 5, 1955, and pitched in parts of three seasons for the Tigers (1955), Baltimore Orioles (1956) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1958), compiling a 4-3 record with a 4.36 ERA, four saves and 45 strikeouts over 56 appearances and 119 2/3 innings. His nickname was earned in one unforgettable game: on July 19, 1955, at Briggs Stadium, Birrer pitched four scoreless relief innings against Baltimore and, batting for himself, hit two three-run home runs off George Zuverink and Art Schallock in a 12-4 Detroit win. Those two homers and six RBI would stand as his entire career totals in both categories, and the feat is what led teammates to dub him "Babe." This 1956 Topps card is Birrer's rookie card and, like others in the first series, exists with both the common white and scarcer gray back stock. Birrer died in 2013 and is a member of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only.
