About Frank House
Henry Franklin "Pig" House was a left-handed-hitting catcher (he threw right-handed) born February 18, 1930, in Bessemer, Alabama. Signed by the Detroit Tigers straight out of Hueytown High School in 1948, he was one of the era's celebrated "bonus babies," reportedly landing one of the biggest signing packages of its time — around $75,000 plus two automobiles. He debuted with Detroit on July 21, 1950, at age 20, and his big-league service was interrupted by a military stint in the early 1950s before he returned to the Tigers in 1954. Over a 10-season career (1950–51, 1954–57 and 1961 with Detroit, 1958–59 with the Kansas City Athletics, and 1960 with the Cincinnati Reds), House appeared in 653 games and batted .248 with 47 home runs and 235 RBI. His nickname "Pig" traced to childhood — family lore held he was "big as a house," which he playfully turned into "Pig." After baseball he served in the Alabama Legislature, helped establish the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and was inducted into it in 1975; he died March 13, 2005. As a first-series card, #32 exists with both the more common white back stock and the scarcer gray back stock prized by 1956 Topps collectors.

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)
Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.
- White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
