About Frank Lary
A hard-nosed right-hander born April 10, 1930, in Northport, Alabama, Frank Lary starred at the University of Alabama before Detroit scout Bill Pierre signed him in June 1950 for a reported $6,000. After a stint in the low minors, military service, and a 1953 no-hitter for Buffalo, Lary debuted with the Tigers on September 14, 1954 and spent 11 seasons anchoring Detroit's rotation (1954-1964), later pitching briefly for the Mets, Milwaukee Braves, and White Sox in 1964-1965. In 1956 — the season pictured on this card — he broke through by leading the American League with 21 wins (21-13), pacing the circuit in games started and innings pitched. He was a two-time All-Star (1960, 1961) and had his best year in 1961 at 23-9. Lary earned lasting fame as the "Yankee Killer," going a remarkable 28-13 against the powerhouse New York Yankees, including a 7-1 mark in 1958; teammates also called him "Taters" after he wrote the word for potatoes on a dining-car order. He finished 128-116 with a 3.49 ERA and 1,099 strikeouts over 12 big-league seasons, and died December 13, 2017, at age 87.
