About Carl Furillo

Carl Furillo signed with the Reading, Pennsylvania, club of the Interstate League in 1940, and the Brooklyn Dodgers were so taken with him that they bought the entire Reading franchise to secure his contract. After three battle stars in the Pacific during World War II, the right fielder debuted for Brooklyn in 1946 and spent his whole 15-year career (1946-1960) with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. A cornerstone of the "Boys of Summer" clubs that reached seven World Series between 1947 and 1959, he won titles in 1955 and 1959 and homered in his first at-bat of the 1955 Series. Furillo won the 1953 NL batting crown at .344 and was a two-time All-Star (1952-1953), retiring with a .299 average, 1,910 hits, 192 home runs, and 1,058 RBI. His cannon of a throwing arm from right field earned him the nickname "The Reading Rifle," while teammates called him "Skoonj" after scungilli, his favorite Italian seafood dish.
