About Sandy Koufax

Signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in December 1954 as a "bonus baby" out of the University of Cincinnati, left-hander Sandy Koufax never pitched in the minors, going straight to the majors as a wild teenager. This 1956 Topps card catches him early in his career with Brooklyn, years before he became the game's most dominant pitcher. Over 12 seasons with the Dodgers (Brooklyn 1955-57, Los Angeles 1958-66), he went 165-87 with a 2.76 ERA and 2,396 strikeouts. After control troubles early on, he erupted in the 1960s: five straight ERA titles (1962-66), three unanimous Cy Young Awards (1963, 1965, 1966), the 1963 NL MVP, and four no-hitters capped by a perfect game on September 9, 1965. A four-time World Series champion (1955, 1959, 1963, 1965) and two-time Series MVP, he retired after 1966 at age 30 because of chronic arthritis in his pitching elbow. Later dubbed "The Left Arm of God," he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972, the youngest player enshrined to that point. The card's cartoon back reads "An Educated Fast Ball," and, like other early-series 1956 cards, it exists with both white- and gray-back stock.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

  • White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
