About Walt Alston

Walter Emmons "Smokey" Alston (1911-1984) is pictured here as manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers on his rookie card, issued during the second of his 23 seasons at the club's helm. Born in Venice (Darrtown), Ohio, Alston had a famously brief playing career: his entire major-league resume consisted of one game for the St. Louis Cardinals on September 27, 1936, in which he struck out in his lone at-bat and committed an error at first base. He spent 13 years as a minor-league infielder (hitting .295 with 176 home runs) before turning to managing, guiding Dodgers farm clubs including the 1946 Nashua team, one of the first integrated professional clubs in the United States. Promoted to Brooklyn in 1954 on the first of 23 consecutive one-year contracts, Alston managed the Dodgers through 1976, winning seven National League pennants and four World Series titles (1955 with Brooklyn, then 1959, 1963, and 1965 in Los Angeles); the 1955 championship was the only World Series ever won by the Brooklyn franchise. Nicknamed "Smokey" for his fastball as a young pitcher and later called "the Quiet Man" for his reserved manner, he retired with 2,040 regular-season victories and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1983. As with all cards #1-180 in the set, this issue exists with both the common white and scarcer gray back-stock.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

  • White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
