About Don Zimmer
Donald William "Popeye" Zimmer signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1949 and worked his way up through the club's farm system before debuting in the majors on July 2, 1954. A right-handed utility infielder who played shortstop, second base, and third base, he spent parts of 12 big-league seasons (1954-1965) with the Dodgers, Cubs, Mets, Reds, and Senators, batting .235 with 773 hits, 91 home runs, and 352 RBI over 1,095 games. He was a member of Brooklyn's 1955 World Series champions -- starting the first two games at second base and collecting a hit in each -- and won a second title with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959, earning his lone All-Star selection with the Cubs in 1961. Zimmer's career was shadowed by two brutal beanings: a near-fatal 1953 minor-league pitch from Jim Kirk that fractured his skull, and a Hal Jeffcoat fastball on June 23, 1956, that broke his cheekbone and ended his season the year this card was issued. Nicknamed "Popeye" because his muscular arms reminded people of the cartoon sailor, he went on to a decades-long career as a manager and coach, most famously as Joe Torre's Yankees bench coach through four World Series titles from 1996 to 2003, and never held a job outside baseball until his death in 2014. This first-series card exists with both white and the scarcer gray back-stock.
