About Karl Spooner
Left-hander Karl Spooner was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1951 and made one of the most electric debuts in baseball history. After a 21-9, 262-strikeout season with the Fort Worth Cats of the Texas League in 1954, he was called up that September and shut out the pennant-winning New York Giants 3-0, striking out 15 to set a record for a major-league debut and fanning six in a row across the seventh and eighth innings. Four days later he blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 with 12 strikeouts, giving him 27 in two straight games, a National League record at the time. Nicknamed "King Karl," he seemed destined for stardom, but he hurt his shoulder in spring training 1955 warming up hastily after Johnny Podres, and his blazing fastball never fully returned. His final big-league appearance came in Game 6 of the 1955 World Series, when the Yankees roughed him up in a five-run first inning; Brooklyn nonetheless won its only title the next day. Spooner finished with a 10-6 record and 3.09 ERA over just two seasons (1954-55) and never pitched in the majors again. Born in Oriskany Falls, New York, in 1931, he died in 1984. This card is found with both white and gray back stock, the gray being the scarcer of the two.
