About Sandy Amoros
Edmundo "Sandy" Amoros Isasi was a Cuban-born left fielder who threw and batted left-handed and stood just 5-foot-7. A star in Cuban amateur play and the Negro-league New York Cubans, he was signed by Dodgers scout Al Campanis in the winter of 1951-52 for a $1,000 bonus; Campanis nicknamed him "Miracle Wrists" for the surprising power in his small frame, while the "Sandy" tag came from teammate Bert Haas in 1952, said to reference boxer Sandy Saddler. After tearing up the minors — including a 1953 International League batting crown at Montreal (.353) — he reached Brooklyn to stay and spent his career with the Brooklyn (1952-1957) and Los Angeles (1958-1959) Dodgers and the Detroit Tigers (1960), hitting roughly .255 with 43 home runs. His enduring fame rests on Game 7 of the 1955 World Series: entering as a defensive replacement in left, he raced to the line to make a running, one-handed catch of Yogi Berra's drive and doubled Gil McDougald off the bases, preserving Brooklyn's 2-0 lead and helping the Dodgers win their only World Series title. This first-series card belongs to the run in which Topps printed both scarcer gray-back and more common white-back stock.

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only.
