1956 Topps #58 Ed Roebuck
1956 Topps #58 Ed Roebuck

About Ed Roebuck
A product of Southwestern Pennsylvania's coal country, right-hander Ed Roebuck signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1949 and won 45 games over three seasons for the Triple-A Montreal Royals before reaching the majors in 1955. A durable bullpen workhorse, he appeared in 460 big-league games (only one a start) across 11 seasons with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Senators, and Philadelphia Phillies (1955-1958, 1960-1966), retiring with a 52-31 record (.627), a 3.35 ERA, 62 saves, and 477 strikeouts. As a rookie he led the pennant-winning 1955 Dodgers with 12 saves and earned a World Series ring when Brooklyn finally beat the Yankees, pitching in Game 6 of that Fall Classic and returning to the Series again in 1956. His finest season came in 1962, when he went 10-2 out of the Los Angeles pen; that year also brought heartbreak, as he took the loss in the decisive playoff game that sent the Giants to the World Series. Beyond pitching, Roebuck was celebrated as one of the game's great fungo hitters, famously helping owner Roy Hofheinz gauge the roof height for the Houston Astrodome by launching towering fly balls. He later became a longtime scout and died in 2018 at age 86. This #58 card, part of Series 1, exists with both the common white and scarcer gray back-stock of the 1956 Topps set.

Variations & how to tell them apart
White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)
Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.
- White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
