About Rip Repulski
Eldon John "Rip" Repulski was a right-handed outfielder born October 4, 1928, in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Signed by Cardinals scout Walter Shannon, he climbed the St. Louis farm system through stops including Fresno, Omaha, and Houston before debuting on April 14, 1953. A fine defensive outfielder, he became the Cardinals' regular center fielder as a rookie, hitting .275 with 15 home runs and drawing Rookie of the Year votes; manager Eddie Stanky thought so highly of his glove that he gave Repulski the number 8 once worn by Cardinals great Terry Moore. His best seasons came in 1954 (career-high .283, 19 homers, 39 doubles) and 1955 (23 home runs), and he earned a National League All-Star selection in 1956, the year of this Topps card. Over nine seasons (1953-1961) with the Cardinals, Phillies, Dodgers, and Red Sox he batted .269 with 830 hits, 106 home runs, and 416 RBIs across 928 games. He won his only World Series ring as a reserve with the 1959 Los Angeles Dodgers. The nickname "Rip" was pinned on him within the St. Louis farm system; before that, hometown papers had called him "Al." Repulski died February 10, 1993, in his native Sauk Rapids.
