About Joe Frazier
Joseph Filmore "Cobra" Frazier (1922-2011), pictured here as a St. Louis Cardinal, was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and one of the National League's premier pinch-hitters of the mid-1950s. Signed in 1941 by the Class D Leaksville-Draper-Spray Triplets and later routed into the Cleveland organization, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II before debuting for the Indians in 1947. His signature season came with the Cardinals in 1954, when he led the NL with 20 pinch hits (batting .323 off the bench) and hit .295 overall; manager Eddie Stanky, impressed by his quick bat, tagged him "Cobra." Frazier played parts of four big-league seasons (1947, 1954-1956), suiting up for the Indians, Cardinals, Redlegs, and Orioles, and famously homered for three different clubs during 1956. Over 217 games he batted .241 with 10 home runs and 45 RBI. He is better remembered for his second career: after winning the 1975 International League pennant with the Tidewater Tides and Sporting News Minor League Manager of the Year honors, he managed the New York Mets to an 86-76 third-place finish in 1976 before being replaced by Joe Torre 45 games into 1977. His 1956 Topps card carries the set's white-back/gray-back stock variation found on the low-number series (#1-180).

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
